Ginger, Zingiber officinale

I am so grateful to ginger. Ginger, Zingiber Officinale, has been a cornerstone to my life, as it has been for many. When fallen ill, we unconsciously seek ginger to make us feel better. Ginger is an herb that meets a plethora of our needs, yet is rarely thanked, given gratitude or honored. Ginger root can take up to two years to grow, hidden underground, its root connecting deep to the soil and connecting to the earth that sustains us. For me, ginger gives me warmth, both physically and emotionally. Ginger is the affection I seek when sad, lonely or even frustrated. Ginger gives us flavor and nutrients when we are hungry, seeking to satisfy our taste buds and nutritional needs. 

 

Energetically, ginger is a warming herb when fresh, and considered to be a hot herb when dried. This means that the properties of this herb warm the body. Personally, I enjoy adding ginger slices to my apple slices in the winter, to balance the cooling effects of the apple with warmth. Because of the warming effects of ginger, ginger is great to combat stagnant blood that may be causing painful menstruations, blood clots or stabbing pains. Ginger can assist with inflammatory pain, contributing to the relief of muscle pains or arthritis.

 

One of the popular uses for ginger is for colds and flus. Ginger can provide relief of sore throats, congestion or fevers. Ginger is also one of the best herbs for digestive issues. Its warming and aromatic properties makes it a great option for use of cold, stagnant digestive issues such as gas, bloating or constipation. 

 

Ginger is one that is close to my herb. Not only for tending to my emotional heart, but also because it has been shown to modulate cholesterol to healthy levels. Although ginger can be found in millions of homes to be used as a culinary spice, ginger is one that can be used to promote a healthy lifestyle, support several functions of the body, and support you when you are not at your best.
